PUB’s Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) came out tops at the 2022 Bentley’s Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure

Bentley Systems Incorporated, an infrastructure engineering software company, has announced Tuas WRP as the winner of the ‘Water and Wastewater’ category as the 2022 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure. The annual awards event recognises outstanding digital advancements in infrastructure projects across the globe, with more than 180 organisations from 47 countries vying for honours.

A state-of-the-art treatment facility for industrial and household wastewater, PUB’s Tuas WRP is designed and constructed by Jacobs to maximise water recovery and reduce energy consumption. The winning work saw the project leveraging digital solutions, such as 3D visualization tools, to facilitate the planning, design, and construction of this large-scale and complex infrastructural development. Speaking of digital transformation, it will be one of the themes presented at next year’s SIWW Spotlight 2023, taking place from 4-6 June in Singapore at the Paradox Singapore Merchant Court at Clarke Quay.

A by-invitation Summit, Spotlight 2023 will bring together some 400 leaders from utilities, cities, and industry to share experiences and solutions in tackling climate and water sustainability challenges. Themed “Urgent Climate Action for a Sustainable Water Future”, sessions at Spotlight 2023 will feature a closed-door roundtable for utility CEOs, industry plenaries, workshops, and networking events to drive impactful exchanges and build partnerships for collective action.

PUB Global Innovation Challenge 3 is here with 4 new challenges!

PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, is in constant pursuit of great ideas to transform into a Smart Utility of the Future. PUB Global Innovation Challenge seeks to accelerate our discovery and adoption of smart solutions and new technologies to improve operational excellence and meet future water needs.

Currently on its third run, PUB Global Innovation Challenge’s 4 new challenges are:

PUB invites companies, researchers, and innovators from all around the world to propose solutions to our challenges. Selected applicants of the PUB Global Innovation Challenge will be given the opportunity to validate their ideas, secure pilot funding of up to S$250,000 and find the product-market fit in the water industry. Binnies’ centennial celebrates its rich history and role in supporting Singapore’s water story

With limited land for water storage and a lack of natural water resources, water is an existential challenge for Singapore – one that the country has been acutely aware of since its early days. Throughout the years, Binnies has been a supportive partner in this all-important journey that began in 1922. A long-standing partner of Singapore, Binnies helped our nation build upon colonial-era water supply foundations, developed the first blueprint for water supply diversification for Singapore Water Supply in the 1970s and played significant roles in major water projects across the country.

As the population in Singapore grew alongside rapid economic growth and industrialisation, water demands in the country continued to rise. Binnies helped the country realise its Four National Taps vision, providing engineering solutions and technology for SingSpring Desalination Plant, our first large-scale seawater desalination facility in Tuas. In the years after, Binnies was also involved in three other desalination plants, including Tuaspring Desalination Plant, Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, and the latest Jurong Island Desalination Plant.

Other notable projects that Binnies was involved in include the provision of engineering works for Tuas Nexus – a world-first – featuring a fully integrated used water treatment and solid waste management facility co-located in a single greenfield site. Binnies also collaborated on a nationwide project that helped to complete another long-term vision for Singapore — a recycled water super-highway – providing engineering design for the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Phase 2 (DTSS Phase 2).

Binnies also applied its digital and design expertise at the Choa Chu Kang Waterworks, setting the requirements for smart technologies and digital solutions to improve operational efficiencies. Recently, the company also delivered a feasibility study commissioned by PUB for underground stormwater drainage and storage systems to mitigate the impact of rainfall-induced floods. Binnies has also spearheaded the application of technology and expertise from the Singapore water infrastructure model to projects in the Asia Pacific, namely the Batamindo Industrial Park in Indonesia, Suzhou Sino-Singapore Industrial Park in China, and projects under the purview of the Manila Water Enterprise in the Philippines.

Singapore's progress over the decades has been exemplary, and the country continues to formulate long-term plans as it aims for a water-sustainable future. Reaffirming its commitment to supporting Singapore, Binnies – now an RSK Group company – is ready to power these plans with new digital water technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and data analytics. With these technologies, and the collaboration between Binnies, the wider RSK Group and other leaders in innovation, Binnies is firm in its commitment to ensuring the next 100 years see as much success for Singapore.

Singapore recognises two researchers with 2022 President’s Science and Technology Awards

Singapore has awarded two researchers with the prestigious 2022 President’s Science and Technology Awards (PSTA). The recipients were recognised for their invaluable contributions to the city-state’s biomedical and sustainability efforts.

In particular, the President’s Technology Award was awarded to Professor Wang Rong, chair in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Nanyang Technological University and founder of start-ups H2MO Technology and Aromatec.

She was recognised for her significant contributions to the field of membrane science and technology. Over the course of her career, she has developed novel membranes that can be used for applications like desalination, water reclamation, wastewater treatment, liquid purification, and gas separation. Significantly, her research has made waves as a part of Singapore’s NEWater effort. Read more here.
